TASK 6 - Draft statement of intent

Draft statement of intent:

Media Language

Paradise will comprise of various elements that are conventions of a fashion magazine. Firstly both front covers will have a mid-shot ,  typical on front covers like Vogue. The shot will allow the camera to capture the models clothing, facial expressions, which will be serious and focused in both case, direct eye contact will also be seen : a typical trait on front covers. For the contents page I plan to use a variety of shots e.g. long shots , close ups , focusing on the aspect of fashion or skincare. In terms of mise en scene I plan to not use many props on the model, so  the audience’s focus remains on the models clothing. However, I am planning to use certain pieces of clothing as props e.g. a denim jacket on the model to give the message of South Asian fashion merging with western culture. The structure of the writing on the front covers and contents page will also make Paradise a conventional fashion magazine. On the front covers the cover lines will be arranged around the body shape of the models , and the colour of the cover lines will match either with the masthead or the clothing of the models. As in most magazines the masthead, date and edition will be written clearly on the top of the cover page. The contents pages will include a mixture of images and texts ,  aligned with one another using columns and grids, to ensure that the final piece looks well-structured and professional.

Media Representation:

Paradise will focus on South Asian fashion particularly Pakistani and Bangladeshi fashion, in the UK. Paradise targets women in Britain who see their ethnic clothing as an important aspect of their identity , but their passion of  is not well represented as a leading South Asian fashion magazine does not exist. Hence I felt that it was important to produce a magazine that represented this part of the population in two ways; elder women who prefer traditional forms of South Asian clothing and younger women who seem to want to blend this fashion with western culture. To ensure that I fairly represent this concept it is essential to have two women on the front covers who belong from South Asia. One who has a strong passion for her ethnic dresses and another who is merges it with British culture. Hence on the front covers I plan to use one model originating from Pakistan; Areej , highly passionate about Pakistani fashion. On the second cover I plan to use a model originating from Bangladesh, who will be a representation of women who are not strong traditional in terms of fashion but prefer to merge it with western culture. Someone who sees her British identity as equally important to her Bangladeshi identity. To ensure that this message is successfully portrayed on the cover the model will wear a trendy top styled according to South Asian culture , and pair it with a denim jacket , the look created will be very simple , one that will be liked to be worn by young women confidentially anywhere.

 Media Audience:

Paradise addresses its audience, women originating from South Asian countries in various ways. On the front covers the model will be seen wearing south Asian clothe e.g. in the first cover Areej will wear an embroidered top with a dupatta (shawl) usually worn with Asian clothing. The idea of wearing a dupatta with a suit is very popular and  in south Asian fashion , hence it becomes an important way in which the audience will become attached to Paradise as the style of clothing on the front covers and contents pages will be recognized by them. Paradise will also targets it’s audiences through the cover lines, on the front cover the full names of both the models will be mentioned , which would be in both cases be well heard off south Asian names. Furthermore the cover lines on the contents page will mention names of for example Pakistani brands and fashion designers such as Maria B ; very popular in the UK. In order to make sure that Paradise allows the message of western culture merging with South Asian fashion to come across , a model originating from china will be used to represent the skincare side of the magazine. This is so that women belonging from other ethnicities in the UK do not feel excluded and are able to attach to something in Paradise.

Media Industries:

I would want Paradise to  collaborate with a well-known magazine producer and distributer e.g. Conde Nast the distributer for Vogue. Conde Nast has already collaborated with many countries e.g. Vogue India , Vogue Italia , but it has not yet merged with Pakistan or Bangladesh, hence this combo will not only be beneficial for Paradise but also be appealing for Conde Nast , as they are known for international distributions and production. However, because Vogue is a leading fashion magazine it can be argued that it would want a separate magazine under it’s name  e.g. Vogue Pakistan or Vogue Bangladesh , in such a case  paradise would need to get produced by a smaller company perhaps in Pakistan or Bangladesh  and in a few years of success it may become owned and distributed by Conde Nast .Paradise will be circulated widely around the UK ; corner shops , magazine stores to hopefully bigger retailers such as Asda , Tesco and Sainsbury , this is the sole way in which Paradise will become a leading South Asian Fashion magazine.

Summary of Intent:

A magazine and a website can digitally converge with one another in many ways, and this convergence has countless benefits for the production , distribution and circulation of the magazine. Firstly for those audiences who do not have the time go and buy  Paradise from stores  can easily access the same content from the web at any time they wish. Of course they will need to have a subscription for the access e.g. £8-10 for 5 issues of Paradise. A magazine will only provide a brief description of the clothes and skincare products , but a website can give further details, compelling readers to purchase a product ,enhancing distribution and circulation. Having a website for Paradise makes the audience  capable of viewing the previous editions , which they may not necessarily wish to purchase , and through subscription the editions will be provided at a much cheaper price. The strongest benefit of the two products merging with one another is that the content of the website can be easily shared on social media platforms by audiences, e.g. through a screenshot which can be posted and shared on instagram and Snap chat , increasing the circulation of the magazine.
